INTRO: Discipleship hurts / Can’t Rush This Message…
Your deepest needs are spiritual
Peace doesn’t come without effort
This “god” never satisfies
We must starve it; cut off it’s fuel source.
Page 96, No Longer A Slumdog
Matt. 8:19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” LUKE 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
Carrying the cross was in submission to Rome – we submit to Christ.
Take Spiritual Inventory
Are you carrying a burden for the gospel? Does your life go against the culture? Do people tease you? Do you make the right decisions in difficult circumstances?
Is your heart filled with the fruit of the spirit? Do you lack purpose and peace…is God’s will elusive? Are you defensive when questioned about spending?
To Follow the True God we Must Dethrone the False “gods”
Animals Live Better than most of the world
Focus too much on checklists/practical application; not on heart change.
God will often engineer circumstance to crush our gods, but we hold on for dear life.
You won’t live as comfortably as you once did…but you will live free…blessed.
When we are tapped out there is no peace.
Matthew 25:35, “I was hungry, & you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, & you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, & you invited Me in.”
Giving Has to Hurt! We are not truly following Him if there is not a cost.
Life is often led by the flesh: addiction, sleep, minimal work to pay for pleasure, flop down, over indulge, repeat.
Steps to freedom:
1. Begin by Repenting. 2. Give to break the hold 3. Let go of what you most hold dear. 4. Restructure your lifestyle
1. Give where you’re fed / 2. Give according to passion
3. Give to those in need
KEY: O.T. repentance. What do you think they repented of?
Jonah 2:8 Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love. Isaiah 44:94 All who fashion idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit.
Exodus 20:3-6 “You shall have no other gods before me.”
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger…and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
1 John 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
Colossians 3:5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
Selfishness Must Die: Ezekiel 16:49, “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.”
Top Killers in American vs. Impoverished Countries: ABUNDANCE KILLS US, LACK KILLS THEM
Psalm 82:3, “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.”
THE ROLE OF THE FATHER: Feed, Clothe, Provide for…
To dethrone these “gods”…
Preaching won’t do it; attending church won’t do it; thinking about it won’t do it; being convicted won’t do it; worship alone won’t do it; AND stagnant prayer is useless against this idol. IT MUST BE CRUSHED!
Isaiah 58: “prayers weren’t answered; their fast was useless.”
8 Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. 9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’ “If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, 10 If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday. 11 The Lord will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden,
And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.
Giving often opens the door to God’s blessings: It Is Well With My Soul…
