Surviving the Anointing pt.2

INTRO: Started w/ the EXPERIENCE at the Mt. of Transfiguration

We are given the gift, but what we do with it is our responsibility – “be filled with the Spirit”, or to quench and grieve.

  • BOLDNESS always follows the anointing; RESTING in God’s sovereignty; NOT walking according to the flesh; NOT relying on impulse or appearance; DON’T judge God’s will by circumstances alone; God’s will is URGENT:

Surviving the Anointing involves admitting when something isn’t working

MESSAGE: 1 Samuel 17:38 So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail. 39 David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So David took them off.

40 Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. 41 So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him. 42 And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was only a youth, ruddy and good-looking. 43 So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”

  • 5 stones: Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, Gaza, and Gath

Proverbs: “Wisdom is the principle thing…”

  • There was also wisdom in NOT using a sword and shield and in grabbing “smooth” stones.

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47 Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.”

  • “The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the LORD.” Prov. 21:31

48 So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49 Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

  • Surviving the Anointing involves a fight: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7

After a season of great victory often comes great defeat because we don’t continue in the anointing – continue in what got us there in the 1st place:

  1. Reject wisdom – 2. Stand in the path of sin – 3. Take the bait –

  • David and Bathsheba – David dropped his guard

  • Saul Disobeyed – REJECTING wisdom is really disobedience

  • Samson and Delilah –

Delilah Was Sent to destroy the anointing – What’s Your Delilah …

  • 3 times he lied; why did he finally tell her the truth?

16 With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was sick to death of it.

  • Constantly harassing someone to do something.

He didn’t believe he would actually lose the anointing – he was apprehensive, but not serious.

  • Jails are filled with men and women saying “what happened”? Millions of homes across our nation are partially empty tonight saying “what happened – how are we head for divorce”? Millions of kids are saying, “What’s wrong with mommy – what’s wrong with daddy” as they drink, snort, OR inject their life away. WHAT HAPPENED?

THEY LOST THE ANOINTING – THEY LOST THE CALL OF GOD ON THEIR LIFE! They walked away from truth and embraced a lie  –

As Planned Parenthood rips children from the womb and sells the parts, as the Boy Scouts encourage.., as homosexual activists in Germany use pages of the Bible as…and as “assisted suicide” is the new ‘cool’ thing …

CLOSING:

A] For the believer, they must return

The Anointing is a precious gift that the enemy wants to take AND the 1st step he takes is to get you away from prayer, worship, and substantial time with God:

  • “Every mighty move of the Spirit of God has had its source in the prayer chamber.”

  • “The little estimate we put on prayer is evidence from the little time we give to it.”

—E. M. BOUNDS

B] For the unbeliever, they must repent and believe

Spurgeon: “The motto of all true servants of God must be, ‘We preach Christ; and him crucified.’ A sermon without Christ in it is like a loaf of bread without any flour in it. No Christ in your sermon, sir? Then go home, and never preach again until you have something worth preaching.” [7/9/1876; sermon #2899]
