Where Are The Bold, Authoritative Preachers Today?

January 15th, 2011 | Posted by admin in Articles - (Comments Off on Where Are The Bold, Authoritative Preachers Today?)

A friend recently asked, “Where are those with uncompromising power and God-given authority in our pulpits today?” His statement reminded me of the desperate need for passionate, spirit-filled preachers focused on pleasing God rather than man. Our culture’s false perception of God as a cosmic ball of love, or a doting grandfather desperately needs to be challenged.

Unfortunately, difficult truths are often compromised, watered-down, or avoided altogether in the hope of “not offending,” “securing an audience,” or building a “mega-ministry.” As a result, the church is a mile wide but only an inch deep; judgment is never mentioned, repentance is never sought, sin is often excused, and lives are not radically changed.

Money, Pride & Destructive Relationships Hinder Holiness

As mentioned last week: If we truly want to experience the power of God, we must surrender pivotal areas of our lives.

The first area was our “time.” I John 2:15 says, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” We claim that we don’t have time for God, but we find time to enjoy the things of this world. If we don’t schedule time, time will schedule for us. “So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). Time is not like money; it can’t be earned, borrowed, or saved. You do, however, spend it, so spend wisely.

The Forgotten God – Who is the Holy Spirit?

November 13th, 2010 | Posted by admin in Articles - (Comments Off on The Forgotten God – Who is the Holy Spirit?)

It may be hard to believe, but I actually knew a pastor who asked his worship leader to remove all songs mentioning the Holy Spirit. How sad…in his zeal to avoid charismatic excesses, he actually quenched the Spirit.

Why is the doctrine of the Holy Spirit so confusing when the Bible is crystal clear on the need for the Spirit’s power? In my opinion, one of the problems is “balance”, or a lack thereof. Many churches tend to embrace one extreme, or the other. Some have identified the two extremes as resembling either circuses or cemeteries. In the circus environment, anything goes. Ungodly behavior is excused by saying, “The Spirit is moving.” Often, the Spirit is not moving; human emotions, and fleshly impulses are. The Holy Spirit may, or may not be present, but sheer outward acts are no guarantee.
