The Sovereign Lord – God’s Got This

THEOLOGY ON FIRE PART 7

Wayne Grudem on sovereignty, “God’s exercise of power over all of His creation.”

(1) Preservation – God keeps all created things existing and maintaining the properties with which he created them. Hebrews 1:3 tells us that Christ is “upholding the universe by his word of power.”

If Christ were to cease his continuing activity of sustaining all things in the universe, then all except the triune God would instantly cease to exist.

Our dependence on God is affirmed every time we pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matt. 6:11), but we often have to cooperate.

  • He may relent as in the case of Hezekiah and II Chronicles 7:14.

  • People become frustrated when don’t know WHY, WHAT, WHEN, HOW, WHERE?

APPLICATION: God’s got this. On screen – Psalm 56:3-4 (NKJV) Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word; [in respect to God]), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?

  • The court battle; the tough decision; the rebellious child; the broken marriage; failing health – GOD’S GOT THIS, but you have to position yourself.

OLD HYMN IN 1887 – When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way! While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey. Refrain: Trust and obey, for there’s no other way; To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

  • The court battle – humble and gracious [reflect the nature of Christ]

  • The tough decision – submit and wait, Vs. yelling and cursing?

  • The rebellious child – loving and gentle, or sarcastic while throwing the Bible.

  • The broken marriage – ALL OF THE ABOVE

  • Failing health – trusting, or surrendering to fear?

(2) Concurrence- God cooperates with created things in every action, directing their distinctive properties to cause them to act as they do.

  • The psalmist declares that “Whatever the LORD pleases he does, in heaven and on earth…”. (Ps. 135:6). EVEN “The lot is cast into the lap, but the decision is wholly from the LORD” (Prov. 16:33).

God’s sovereignty is the primary cause; our involvement is the secondary cause.

  • Perfect will / permissive will: trust in the PERFECT; pray for the PERMISSIVE.

This is why we walk by faith and not sight.

APPLICATION: God’s got this. On screen – Psalm 56:3-4 (NKJV) Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?

  • Rom. 8:28 NKJV And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

DO YOU LOVE HIM – ARE YOU IN HIS WILL?

Through concurrence, the enemy tries to derail God’s train: Detours to Your Destiny

  • Running along the side of Sovereignty is the devil trying to trip the runner.

  • Sitting next to the Architect is the devil with an eraser.

  • Standing next to the Builder is the the devil with a wrecking ball

Moses, Esther, Jesus –

⇩    All of these were done by the governing body –

(3) Government- God has a purpose in all that he does in the world and he providentially governs or directs all things in order that they accomplish his purposes. We read in Psalm 103:19, “His kingdom rules over all.”

  • God often governs through government, but the enemy reverses Romans 13.

Rom. 13:1-4 [NKJV] Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.

  • The enemy wants to silence the voice or truth in the area of government [the church and the family].

“In those days politics were preached in the pulpits and men were led to action on the side of freedom by faithful pastors.”  BENSON J. LOSSING (1813-1891), 19TH CENTURY HISTORIAN

  • What if getting political is getting biblical?

Not getting carried away, but carrying the mantle for future generations.

You can’t be bold and truthful and soft and quiet!

The pulpit sets the tone – not Fox News or CNN.

I love all of those who struggle with sin [I struggle] – but we must stop mocking God and flaunting our sin. You want true freedom – REPENT!

“I do not believe that the Constitution was the offspring of inspiration, but I am as perfectly satisfied that the Union of the States, in its form and adoption, is as much the work of a Divine Providence as any of the miracles recorded in the Old and New Testament . . . .” BENJAMIN RUSH (1745-1813); SIGNER OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

“All scholars shall live religious, godly, and blameless lives according to the rules of God’s Word, diligently reading the Holy Scriptures . . . .” REQUIREMENTS OF YALE COLLEGE, 1701

“Our laws and our institutions must . . . be based upon and embody the teachings of the Redeemer of mankind. It is impossible that it should be otherwise. In this sense and to this extent, our civilizations and our institutions are emphatically Christian.” RICHMOND v. MOORE, ILLINOIS SUPREME COURT, 1883

We can openly acknowledge God in all areas of government because our government was built on His Word, His precepts, and His principles—we must acknowledge Him as the source of our nation’s strength.

One Nation under God was their cry and declaration, Upon the law of Nature’s God they built a mighty Nation. For unlike mankind before them who had walked this earthen sod, These men would never question the Sovereignty of God.

________

So with a firm reliance on Divine Providence for protection, They pledged their sacred honor and sought His wise direction. They lifted up an appeal to God for all the world to see, And vowed their independence forever to be free.

I’m glad they’re not here with us to see the mess we’re in, How we’ve given up our righteousness for a life of indulgent sin. For when abortion isn’t murder and sodomy is deemed a right, Then evil is now called good and darkness is now called light.

________

While truth and law were founded on the God of all creation, Man now, through law, denies the truth and calls it “separation.” No longer does man see a need for God when he’s in full control, For the only truth self-evident is in the latest poll.

________

But with man as his own master we fail to count the cost, Our precious freedoms vanish and our liberty is lost. Children are told they can’t pray in school and they teach them evolution, When will they see the fear of God is the only true solution? – Roy Moore

APPLICATION: God’s got this. On screen – Psalm 56:3-4 (NKJV) Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?
